When: Wednesday, March 27, 2024 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM ET

Where: online event

In the last decade, women’s participation in public life has increased despite continued challenges to achieve gender parity. New technologies have transformed the way societies engage, creating opportunities to reach a greater number of people and increasing access to information. Unfortunately, the digital realm has become an increasingly violent space, especially for women, faced with the decision of having to choose between their professional aspirations and their personal security, especially in countries suffering from democratic backsliding, authoritarian regimes, and increased levels of insecurity.

In Arab States, nearly half of women internet users report feeling unsafe from online interactions. While in active conflict, technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TF-GBV) is a rampant issue in Ukraine and Russia, where women activists are subject to online bullying and harassment. And in Latin America, one of the most violent regions in the world for women, female political candidates continue to be socially stigmatized.

In honor of International Women’s Month, please join the Wilson Center’s Kennan Institute, Latin America Program, and Middle East Program for a conversation with female public figures from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America, to discuss how public female figures can be better protected against online attacks; the challenges they face as they become influential figures; and the role of the state in providing legal frameworks that support and protect them.

The Icelandic Arctic Cooperation Network, in tandem with ArcticHub and the Arctic Mayors' Forum, will be hosting a session entitled: Hubs and Networks in the Arctic: Connecting Locally, Cooperating Globally.

This session will bring together representatives from various different Arctic networks to discuss their roles, challenges, and possibilities of synergies between the different networks and their function - posing questions regarding the possible utility of a veritable 'network of networks'.

Retrofitting Industries in the Arctic: the Key to our Net Zero Goals

The IACN and Women in Renewable Energy Canada (WiRE) return to continue their collaboration on a webinar series on renewable energy generation in the Arctic with this new instalment on the prospects of industry retrofitting.

The world is striving to achieve net-zero goals by 2050. This is being spearheaded by growing innovation and investment in clean energy technologies. While these long-term projects are crucial, the daily impacts of climate change that we are already facing signal the urgency for employing energy efficient practices.

Key to achieving our net-zero goals is the upgrading of existing infrastructure and industries to become more energy efficient. This webinar will therefore explore how major industries to small scale players and individual homes in the Arctic, can be retrofitted to be more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Join us for a scintillating discussion to unearth the huge potential, economic benefits and challenges this transition will bring.

Gender Equality in the Arctic

On March 5th-6th, the IACN held a workshop on Sharing Wisdom and Knowledges in Edmonton, Canada, as part of the Gender Equality in the Arctic project. This workshop was aimed at bringing together various Indigenous knowledge-holders to discuss the methods of generational and inter-communcal transfer of traditional sources of knowledge.

One such method was introducing capacity-building within the realm of podcasting - an opportune platform for the sharing of wisdom as Indigenous knowledge sharing often takes the form of rich storytelling.

Lending us their expertise were Amber Dion and Terri Cardinal of the 'Two Crees in a Pod' podcast, which explores various facets of the Indigenous experience - it's ways of life, challenges, and blessings.

They took the opportunity to interview the workshop's participants in a mini-series called 'Stories from the North'. The first episode of which is with Nika Silferfox-Young and Debbie Silferfox, exploring stories of love, land, language, reconnection, and advocacy.

Dear WDS Members,

The World Data System is continually seeking to fill two vacant positions on our esteemed Scientific Committee. The WDS-SC is the governing body of WDS, and it is made up of leading scientists experienced in using extensive data resources or data center/service executive leads. SC members are appointed for three years and may renew once. As an organization, we’re committed to fostering effective communication among all members and ensuring their diverse representation in every aspect of our operations.

Visit the WDS website to learn more about the current WDS Scientific Committee.

In line with the WDS Action Plan, in filling these new vacancies we aim to invite fresh perspectives and innovative ideas into our committee. We believe in the power of diversity and inclusiveness, particularly from regions and disciplines where voices have traditionally been underrepresented.

With a special focus on closing gaps in representation from the global south and underrepresented data-intensive disciplines, we’re eager to broaden our horizons. If you’re from one of these areas or possess expertise in such fields, we strongly encourage your participation.

By joining us, you’ll play a significant role in shaping the future of data science and its global impact. You’ll work collaboratively with other committee members from around the world towards common goals – improving quality standards, promoting best practices, and ensuring equitable and global access to data across all scientific domains. Apply today for an opportunity to be part of this transformative journey as we strive for greater diversity and inclusivity within WDS and beyond!
