On the 25th of May Russia launched a nuclear-powered icebreaker from the dockyard in St Petersburg. Preparing its infrastructure and its ports to be ready for more traffic through the Northern Sea Route (NSR) which is believed to be navigable year-round in near future.

According to BBC News, Jakobshavn glacier one of Greenland most important glaciers is changing its behaviour. In the year 2000 it was the fastest flowing ice stream in Greenland, travelling at 17km a year and with its front end retreating and thinning by as much ass 20m year.

Last week was busy in relation to Arctic matters. First the Arctic Council ministerial meeting was held in Rovaniemi, Finland (7 May) and then the Arctic Circle Forum in Shanghai, China (10-11 May). After a controversial meeting in Rovaniemi most of the governement officials flew straight to the Arctic Circle Forum in Shanghai.
