Webcast: The Changing Geopolitics of Critical Minerals and the Future of the Clean Energy Transition

When: 9th March 2023 9:00am – 10:30am ET

Where: Online Event & 5th floor Woodrow Wilson Center

The relationship between China and the US is commonly portrayed in terms of geostrategic competition, often leading to pessimistic accounts of international cooperation. This, in turn, glosses over important institutional innovations and joint efforts around shared concerns on climate change and the clean energy transition. As the shift towards renewable energy accelerates demand for transition energy metals, such as lithium, nickel, and rare earths, how will resource consuming regions, including the United States, the European Union, Japan, and Korea, navigate their relationship with China and the larger developing world, which hold these mineral deposits and are likely to exercise sovereign control over natural resource management?

Political support for renewable energy has undoubtedly increased over the past 10 years, but this has yet to translate into concrete political solutions—not only because of technological limitations in switching to renewables, but also due to increasing conflicts around critical minerals. Not only do we see geopolitics and securitization of minerals as an obstacle, there are also issues on ecological justice and equitable distribution of environmental burdens that hamper cooperation between mineral producers and consumers.

Join us on March 9th to examine the challenges, policy options, and strategic diplomatic alliances needed to minimize confrontation in order to realize individual national commitments and climate emission reduction targets. The discussion will also focus on ways shifting geopolitical alliances are likely to impact prospects for cooperation and specific national initiatives to embrace clean energy.

When: 27th - 28th September 2023

Where: Hamburg, Germany

Among other renewables, biogas is gaining more popularity than ever. It’s one of the results of recent energy crisis and dispute about Europe’s energy independence & security. Coming years will be a turning point for the development and scaling up of biogas production to its full potential.

The green transformation will strengthen economic growth, security and climate action for Europe and our partners. Scaling up biomethane partnerships like The Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP), launched on 28 September 2022, will support achievement of the EU target of 35 bcm annual production and use of sustainable biomethane by 2030. It will also create the preconditions for a further ramp-up of biogas potential towards 2050. Biogas is a cost-efficient path to achieve our ambition to reduce imports of natural gas from Russia. Increasing the capacity of biogas production in the EU and promoting its conversion into biomethane needs an estimated investment amounting to EUR 37 billon euro over the period.

Meeting of the Network of Asian Social Science Data Archives

Taiwan's Survey Research Data Archive (SRDA) is hosting the 2023 Meeting of the Network of Asian Social Science Data Archives (NASSDA) on 17 February 2023. This international network includes data archives from China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan and its annual meeting is a closed-door event for members to update each other on recent progress, share experiences, and discuss potential collaborations amongst data archives in Asian countries.

This year's meeting will feature presentations from Dr. Steven McEachern of the Australian Data Archive (ADA) and Dr. Jonathan Crabtree of Core Trust Seal and Director of Research Data Information Systems (RDIS) at the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science. The presentation by Dr. McEachern will be on the topic of "Social science data archiving and research infrastructure in Australia," while Dr. Crabtree will serve as the discussant.

Although the NASSDA meeting is closed to the public, the organizers hope to attract more social science data archives in Asia and potentially host an open event in the future. You can also view photos and reports from past meetings dating back to 31 January, 2016 at https://nassda.org/events_list/
