Friends of the Arctic – it's time to meet!
Arctic Frontiers 2022 Pathways will reflect on the choices the Arctic is facing in addressing pressing global challenges. The urgency for action will be discussed as the region, alongside with the rest of the globe, maneuvers from one global crisis to another and as the ramifications of the current crisis are still partially to be unveiled. The 2022 conference will discuss the purpose of and pathways forward for Arctic collaboration.
Susannah Streeter and Anniken Fjellberg confirmed as moderators for Arctic Frontiers
Susannah Streeter worked as an anchor and presenter for nearly 18 years. During her time with World Business Report on the BBC World Service and BBC World TV, she delivered breaking stories and gained insight into unfolding economic events from entrepreneurs, economists and analysts. In August 2020, Streeter joined Hargreaves Lansdown as a Senior Investment & Markets Analyst, using her well-honed skills to give expert analysis and commentary for TV, Radio, online and print.
Anniken Fjelberg is an experienced leader, entrepreneur and advisor with extensive experience from various sectors for over 25 years in Norway and internationally. Anniken is an expert in identity strategies, branding and communication. She’s also a renowned speaker, consultant and facilitator for companies and organizations through her consultancy Identio.
We turn science into knowledge
The development of the future Arctic should be knowledge-based, and Arctic Frontiers is founded on the idea of bringing science closer to policy making.
Arctic Frontiers Science conference is traditionally international and multidisciplinary, bringing together social sciences, humanities, physical and life sciences. We are focusing on both fundamental and solution-oriented research with strong impact, which addresses growing societal challenges and needs in the Arctic region.
In 2022, Arctic Frontiers will host five science sessions.
The Mohn Prize 2022
The Mohn Prize 2022 is awarded to Professor John Walsh, chief scientist of the International Research Center and President's Professor of Global Change at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The award ceremony takes place on May 9th during Arctic Frontiers.

Russia’s war is devastating the people and economy of Ukraine, but also sending shockwaves through global systems for natural resources like food, oil and natural gas, and critical minerals. Together, Russia and Ukraine—sometimes referred to as the breadbasket of Europe—account for 29% of global wheat exports, 80% of the world’s sunflower oil, and 40% of its barley. Before the war, Russia provided around 10% of the global supply of oil and just last year, 40% of Europe’s gas came from Russia. And while oil dominates the headlines, the disruption of another resource abundant in the region—critical minerals—has implications for how the United States and its allies respond to interrupted supply chains.
While the biggest impacts of the conflict will continue to be felt by Ukrainians and Russians, the secondary effects on global food and energy systems could be substantial. It’s only by looking at these natural resource systems together that we can truly understand the compounding effect of the conflict on global supply chains. Please join the Wilson Center for a panel discussion with experts to help unpack these complicated systems and explore how policymakers can respond now to head off the worst future outcomes.
