The Gender Equality in the Arctic (GEA) project is proud to announce “GEA III Report Feedback Sessions”, a series of six online sessions presenting the work of the project’s lead-authors for the Pan-Arctic Report on Gender Equality in the Arctic. The sessions are an integral part of the process of calling for feedback and suggestions for the report and to inform future work on the topic of Gender Equality in the Arctic. In each session the lead-authors and selected contributors for one chapter will present their work and answer questions and engage in conversation with registered participants. Participants are invited and encouraged to comment and make suggestions. 

Themes included in the report are:

  • Session 1, Empowerment, 1 Oct. 16:00-18:00 GMT
  • Session 2, Law and Governance, 8 Oct. 16:00-18:00 GMT
  • Session 3, Migration and Mobility, 15 Oct. 16:00-18:00 GMT
  • Session 4, Security, 22 Oct. 16:00-18:00 GMT
  • Session 5, Gender and Environment, 29 Oct. 16:00-18:00 GMT
  • Session 6, Violence and Reconciliation, 5 Nov. 16:00-18:00 GMT

REGISTRATION is free, but only registered participants will be receive the Zoom link to the session/sessions the day before.

IARPC Public Webinar Series: MOSAiC Expedition Overview

Throughout October, IARPC Collaborations will be holding a "MOSAiC Month" focused on the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition. Led by the Alfred Wegener Institute, MOSAiC is the first year-round expedition into the central Arctic exploring the Arctic climate system. The backbone of MOSAiC is the year-round operation of R/V *Polarstern*, which has been drifting with the sea ice across the central Arctic with researchers setting up a distributed regional network of observational sites.

This webinar serves as an introduction and overview of the MOSAiC expedition. All are welcome to attend.

Arctic Research Infrastructure & Capabilities in North America

Research stations and infrastructure in the North American Arctic (Alaska, Canada and Greenland) provide critical science and information about Arctic climate and environment, provide safe bases of operations, and can stimulate international collaboration.

Hosted in partnership with Sandia National Laboratories, this panel aims to survey existing research infrastructure among the North American Arctic nations, explore existing gaps and discuss emerging opportunities for new capabilities or collaboration. Panelists will provide overviews of current research infrastructure in Alaska, Canada and Greenland and plans for addressing emerging needs. Moreover, they will highlight the need for close, international cooperation between North American research institutions.

Polar Institute and Sandia National Laboratories welcome your participation in the live webcast on September 23, 2020.

On July 21, 2020, the United States Department of Air Force released its Arctic Strategy. The strategy “recognizes the immense geostrategic consequence of the region and its critical role for protecting the homeland and projecting global power,” stated Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett. The Secretary also underscored the region’s elevated importance to the Air Force and Department of Defense.

Please join Polar Institute director Dr. Mike Sfraga for a conversation with Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) regarding the Air Force’s Arctic Strategy and its implications for the United States, the North American Arctic, and the unique role Alaska plays in our new, global Arctic.

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the Science & Geopolitics of Himalaya-Arctic-Antarctic (SaGHAA) international Webinar on 'Managing the Polar Oceans Sustainably' on September 28-29, 2020 (4 to 7 pm IST on both the days). The event will be organised online on the GoToWebinar platform.

The 6th SaGHAA conference is scheduled to be held in March 2021. However, as a run-up to the main conference, an International Webinar on Polar Oceans is being held keeping in mind that the United Nations has proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) to support efforts to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health and gather ocean stakeholders worldwide behind a common framework that will ensure that ocean science can fully support countries in creating improved conditions for sustainable development of the Ocean.

HE Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, former president of Iceland and James Gray, Member of Parliament, United Kingdom have kindly agreed to be the Chief Guest and Guest of honour respectively for the event.

Dr M. Ravichandran, Director, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, Goa and Dr Nalan Koc, Director Research, Norwegian Polar Institute, Tromsø, Norway are the organising chairs for the SaGHAA Webinar 2020. We expect over 1000 participants to join us for the SaGHAA Webinar 2020, including delegates from all institutions that have active polar, oceanic and climate change programmes.
