As the next preparedness exercise to be held in Montréal, Canada approaches, the Arctic Council recently announced that the “Agreement on Cooperation on Marine Oil Pollution Preparedness and Response in the Arctic”, which the eight Arctic Council Member States signed in 2013, was formally ratified in late March 2016.

Press release from the Danish Foreign Ministry
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will visit Denmark and Greenland on 16-17 June, accepting an invitation from Minister for Foreign Affairs Kristian Jensen and member of Naalakkersuisut (the Government of Greenland) with responsibility for foreign affairs, Vittus Qujaukitsoq. The visit will focus in particular on the Arctic cooperation, the climate, Syria, ISIL, Ukraine and trade. John Kerry will also meet with the Prime Minister.

Decreased sea ice extent in the Arctic is opening up new possibilities in telecommunications. A new undersea Internet fibre-optic cable system will be laid across the Arctic seabed, creating the shortest link between eastern Asia and western Europe via Alaska and the Canadian Arctic.
